"But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me."
(John 15:26)
"But when the Comforter [has] come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth..." (John 15:26). When making reference to the Holy Spirit, let that phrase "the Spirit of truth"--the Spirit that speaks the Word-- be predominant in your thinking. Contrast the Spirit of truth with the father of lies who is lord of the other kingdom. The liar will tell you whatever you want to hear. That voice that always agrees with you is, more than likely, not the Spirit of truth. That spirit that tells you you're greater than you really are, gives you a false image, and tells you it's acceptable to pursue the things of this world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, the pride of life--is the father of lies. We need to see these two kingdoms and the warfare that's constantly going on in our lives. We're living in a society where we've been deluded. We've been told so many lies about ourselves that many of us have really become incapable of dealing with the truth or knowing the truth when it's spoken. The inability to deal with truth will keep us in darkness for the rest of our lives. If we believe the lies of Satan about who we are, we'll never be able to be what God wants us to be.
We have to ask ourselves whether we are capable of hearing the truth about ourselves. If we're not, then we won't hear anything from the Spirit of truth, because truth is all He speaks. He won't bother to speak to those who refuse to hear. Are we capable of hearing the Holy Spirit, or are our minds made up, being deluded and influenced by the world's methods and standards? Can we even consider that maybe our perception of ourselves is not correct? What makes us capable of hearing the Spirit of truth? What will allow us to hear the Lord's ordering of our steps? How can we ever hear the voice of God if we don't want to know the truth?
Like an earthly father, God is that Father who pities His children and knows that we're but dust. He's so loving and so patient. It's so important that we open ourselves up to the reality of God's desire to reveal our hearts to us so that He can make us into the creatures that He wants us to be.
