God is jealous for His glory. Make sure none of God's glory goes to your idols. How much of God's glory you can see is in direct proportion to how much of your glory has been stripped away. Job was a man that God was proud of. God puts you in the fire to destroy any hope and trust you have in yourself. God wants us to stay until we are thoroughly melted. Trials are to prove our faith, purify our faith and exercise our faith. Your faith is genuine if you're willing to die for it. People who faint don't have genuine faith. The Christian walk is a walk of chastening.
